Say: 'O My servants who have transgressed against your own souls: do not despair of God's mercy, for God forgives all sins. It is S/He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.' Qur'an (39:53)

The following are all interpretations of verse 208 from Surah 2 of Quran

(Al-Baqara 2:208)

It shows why we can never really say Quran has been translated out of  Arabic.

Any translation will involve a degree of the interpreter’s personal choices.

I once felt this made interpretations of Quran a problem for those of us who do not know Arabic,

but I am coming to a new conclusion.

Love speaks in every language.

She speaks from every heart.

When I compare several translations like I have done below,

I see how the translations weave themselves in and throughout,

creating a beautiful tapestry.

I hope you feel blessed with a similar experience when you read this.

May the Lover of the Universe sing to your heart with those words which cause your gratitude to overflow.

*** *** ***

O you who have attained to faith!

Surrender yourselves wholly unto God,

and follow not Satan’s footsteps, for, verily, he is your open foe.

(Muhammad Asad interpretation)

*** *** ***

O ye who believe!

Enter into Islam whole-heartedly;

and follow not the footsteps of the evil one;

for he is to you an avowed enemy.

(Yusuf Ali interpretation)

*** *** ***

You who believe, enter absolutely into peace!

Do not follow Satan´s footsteps; he is an open enemy of yours.

(TB Irving interpretation)

*** *** ***

O you people whose hearts truly believe,

enter into friendly relations with one another

and promote Allah’s requirement of peace and virtuous order

and do not follow AL-Shaytan’s footsteps

nor walk in the footsteps of those with AL- Shaytan’s characteristics;

he is indeed your avowed enemy.

 (Al-Muntakhab interpretation)

*** *** ***

O you who believe, join in peace, all of you,

and do not follow the footsteps of the devil.

He is to you a clear enemy.

(Progressive Muslims interpretation)

I was just visiting a wonderful blog called A Sufi Metamorphisis and enjoyed a post titled “Are Sufis Escapists?”.  Below is the comment I left after reading the post.

I don’t think a Sufi can escape life; its more like Tao where we go with what is and do not resist it. Its about life on God’s terms vs. resisting by wishing life was different. The more we get to know the Beloved, the more we know about life. Life is not necessarily about the earthly body; its the journey of the soul confined in a body. The Quran often advises us to contemplate on the universe to know God. For example:

Truly, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of the night and the day. There are indeed Signs for men of understanding, Men who remember (celebrate) the Praises of Allah, standing, sitting and lying down on their sides and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heaven and the earth, (with the prayer): “Our Lord! Not for nothing have You created (all) this! Glory to You! Give us relief from the Penalty of the Fire. (Quran 3:190-191)

Huuuuu!

The Prophet said, “An hour’s worth of contemplation is better than a year’s worth of worship.”

Kind words and the covering of faults are better than charity followed by injury.

Allah is free of all wants, and He is Most-Forbearing.

Quran 2:263

Muhammad, peace be on him, said, “Muslims will always earn the reward of charity

for planting a tree, sowing a crop

and then birds, humans, and animals eat from it”

(Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Dalai Lama’s words really got me.  This isn’t about you or me.  Its about every citizen of this planet.  I include in that all the species who we share the universe with.  I include birds, rainforests, whales, panda bears…and on an on it goes.  Quran tells us every type of creature is a community of believers.

“Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children.”

-Native American proverb-

There is not an animal (that lives) on the earth,

nor a being that flies on its wings, but (forms part of) communities like you.

Nothing have we omitted from the Book,

and they (all) shall be gathered to their Lord in the end.

—Quran 6:38

O these are Her true servants; these are the lovers of the Most Gracious!
They are the ones who walk humbly and gently upon the earth.
When they are among the ones who are against Her,
they do not become angry nor do they become arrogant.
Rather wherever they go, they offer peace,
“May peace be with both friend and foe.”
Wherever they go, their hearts are full of peace.

(Quran al-Furqan, 25:63)

1 In Her Most Beautiful Names: Constant Source of Kindness.

2 Alhamdulillah! All praise is Hers! The Cherisher and Sustainer of all the worlds above and below, without and within.

3 The One Source of Compassion and Mercy, of Help, of Love and Forgiveness!

4 The One Who Will Call us back home to Her in the afterlife,

5 The Only True Judge of our good and bad deeds,
Who Will Forgive many sins and Who Will show us for the sake of Her Compassion

how we failed to be compassionate ourselves.

6 She alone we worship and She alone do we go to for help, like a child who seeks guidance from a loving parent.

7 O Allah, guide us to a path of righteousness, the path of those who seek Your Blessings, Sheltered beneath Your Love’s Wings.
Not the path of those who walk away from You and are in need of Your Correction.
